I have a 4 1/2 year-old, so these days I spend a lot of time reading children’s books, which I don’t mind at all.
When I take a minute to think about it, I truly believe that my love for design and illustration is deeply rooted in, and stems from, my early childhood, when I would stare for hours at a book, absorbing all of the wonderful details. I particularly loved the illustrations of Dr. Seuss and Richard M. Scarry. Something about them would capture my imagination, and they would never get old. These days, I’m overwhelmed by how many children books are out there. Some are amazing. Some are really bad.
In the “amazing” category is a series of books by author Kate Toms. I love the illustration style, the creative storytelling. In the book shown above, Toms asks: “Why does Itsy Bitsy climb up the spout?” I had to laugh because, after all the years of singing that song, I never stopped to ask the question “Why?” Such a simple question and a really great creative lesson.
